LM-POSTMODERNISM

Postmodernism films often contains the following:

  • Challenges genre conventions and could be a mixture of many genres ie fantasy, action/adventure, comedy, romance and sci-fi instead of conforming to one.
  • Challenges typical character roles as Emmet (hero) is an average person, Wyldstyle (female) is the strongest of the group, an emo and women, whilst Batman is not as heroic as in other films.
  • Pastiche: imitates/ has similarities with other stories, films, books and has a humorous take on troubles n society/culture. Links to the Matrix with a similar storyline/plot, brings in characters from other stories (Batman) and gives the message that imagination is important to have in society and you don’t have to conform to the rules to be different.
  • Hyper-reality: makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie and that it isn’t real (eg. breaking the fourth wall like Deadpool). The Lego Movie is the Lego world in animation with our real life world.

  1. Now that you've used the class notes please answer:

What is the purpose of including Postmodernism? Think about the effect of challenging a range of different genres and how this might appeal to an audience of different ages.
